MY HOME TOUR FROM 91 MAGAZINE

Last summer … remember that, days of endless sunshine and lingering around the salad drawer to keep cool. Seems like a distant memory, but I digress ….. let’s start again. Last Summer, I had the pleasure of working with 91 Magazine on a feature showcasing peastyle HQ in their beautifully printed magazine, one of my favourite independent mags out there.

The days leading up to the shoot were spent frantically slinging clutter in the cupboards and plumping up cushions ready to make the house mag-worthy ….. all in a heatwave. Housework in a heatwave is not to be recommended, I find potching about in the garden sipping on ice cold drinks and staring at the clouds drifting by, a far more edifying experience.

I greeted Kym off the train with a cold bottle of water, she travelled light, all she needed was her trusty camera bag and a pop-up light reflector, we headed back to the house and set about inching plants around surfaces to just the right spot and crumpling bed sheets to just the right degree of crumpledness, not an easy task getting that casual tossled Sunday Morning vibe as opposed to the student digs look.

We whirled around the house and Kym spun her magic behind the lens and captured the house beautifully, I’m so happy with the results. You wouldn’t believe how hot it was under that flouncy blouse in the heat of the day, sipping a non existent tea and pretending to keep warm by the AGA.

All the Autumn Feels

ooof, I must admit, I find the transition from lazing on a sun-lounger in 29 degrees heat to heading home to boots, jeans and the school run a pretty tough pill to swallow and to top it all off, that sun tan that I worked so hard on, it’s under the cover of a polo neck, tragic!!

All is forgiven though when I finally accept the end of summer and start to embrace the cooler, darker evenings by lighting little candles and switching on pretty lights around the house.

Rustic Lighting from peastyle

Rustic Lighting from peastyle

That time of year to get all hyggelig and start to cocoon in our nests. This year I’ve seen a real shift to introducing natural textures to the home, materials that promote health and wellbeing.

Earthy Vases - perfect for collecting dried autumn foliage

I think there is a move in interiors towards making the home a real sanctuary from the busy lives that we lead, a shift towards green and kinder living and to personal wellness. I think we are craving being surrounded by natural materials which are calming and promote a slower pace when we relax at home in our personal retreat. So I’m seeing more rustic wood, natural linen and matte ceramics and natural grass basket-ware as the latest trend in interiors. I for one am embracing this, it’s my favourite style!

Introducing Broste Copenhagen Tableware - Nordic Sea

Broste Copenhagen Tableware, one of those products that's had me firmly in it's grips for a while now and a recent trip to the Danish capital just tipped me over the edge in hitting the button on placing the order on this gloriously tactile crockery.

On the first morning of our trip, we tucked into a hearty breakfast at Grød (a specialist porridge cafe) on the hip Jægersborggade in Nørrebro and I felt giddy with excitement to realise that they had collaborated with Broste Copenhagen to design an effortlessly simple yet stylishly comforting range of earthenware.

My second encounter with this addictive crockery during our stay in Copenhagen, was while we were shopping in a basement emporium selling EVERYTHING on my Scandi wish-list from achingly cool posters, sublimely scented candles and the odd candle stick that couldn't quite fit into my hand luggage. We were greeted by the shop owner, who offered us a cup of hot coffee ..... you guessed it, in a Broste Copenhagen beaker, those ones without a handle so you could properly hug your cold hands around a warm beverage, the embodiment of hygge.

The whole time I was being fed subliminal messages. My mind was made up, that was it, as soon as I was back in the UK, I was definitely placing that order and stocking my all time favourite crockery (or crack-ery - this stuff is addictive you know!)

I settled on The Nordic Sea range, with subtle soft greys, blue hues and hand painted stripes inspired by the waves of the ocean running through each piece. Not that I was looking for one, but it's a perfect excuse to gather around the table, light some candles and enjoy a cosy meal with family and friends.

Broste Copenhagen, one of Scandinavia’s leading interior brands, is more than just interior design, it's a way of life.

Processing is gentle, so the original feel of the material and it's character remain intact – with focus on high quality and their well known Nordic signature in the final design. Their range is always a fine balance between the Nordic tradition and the trends of the moment.

#peasshotoftheday

Scrolling through instagram for inspiration and keeping up with emerging trends is part and parcel of my work. But most of the time, honestly, it just doesn't feel like work at all. It's a fix, as good as a chocolate bar with a cup of tea (this often happens at the same time as a good scrolling session)

I've been curating the hashtag #peasshotoftheday for a while now, it's a way for me to collect homestyle ideas and snippets of rooms that inspire me.  Sharing these images on my feed has been a wonderful way to connect with like minded interiors addicts and engaging with you by opening up a conversation.

I started the hashtag and still do, simply to share rooms that I love, and looking back through them, it's clear that I have a signature style. It seems to be a mixture of "Natural, Minimal, Simple, Scandi and simple tones" it's one thing naming a style and putting it into words, but just browsing through the collection will give you a much better picture of my influences and style.

MOROCCAN VIBE

Every season there's an interior style that hits me like a punch in the guts, in a good way ....... like swinging too high on the swings, or riding a rollercoaster. I'm sure I'm not alone when a certain look and feel for a new home style scheme emerges from the pages of pinterest or the little squares of inspiration over on Instagram, it makes my heart do a little hop, skip and a jump.

The Moroccan vibe is looking like a pretty strong contender for my home style vibe for the next season. Paired back boho mixes so well with the backdrop of clean contemporary lines and works well on so many levels. If you're into the minimalist look or the eclectic maximalist style, then easy homespun Moroccan design fits in effortlessly.

The Berber rug at the moment has got me well and truly in it's grips and has led on to fringed cushions, moroccan wedding blanket throws and macrame wall hangings.

Lighting Up Your Autumn Home

Fall back, Spring forward .............. the the only way I can remember that the clocks go back the end of this month (and not forward duh!)

I struggle with the end of the summer and it takes me a good month to accept that the colder months are on their way, until that is, I start to light the fire and realise that I can pop the little lights on around the house and burn some candles.

Hygge is a massive buzz word at the moment, everywhere I turn I seem to hear people referring to it. The Danes embrace the long dark winter months with "hygge" meaning coziness (as an attempt to scratch the surface of the word)

Lighting the house in the coming months becomes a really important part of embracing the greyer skies that lie ahead. So I've brought you a collection of lovely lighting that will bring a little Hygge into your homes.

I love these informal Z1 lamp shades by Ay Illuninate, creating a relaxed and carefree centrepiece to a scheme. They are a bit on the expensive side though £325 (cough) but we do a great "get the look" alternative at peastyle here for fraction of the cost.

Using task lighting is a great way of dimming the overall lighting in the room without compromising on being able to see your book, sketch book or glass of wine! These concrete and brass standard lamps are one of my favourite products in the peastyle shop at the moment

There are some fabulous bulbs out there now, I know! who'd have believed that the bulb would take centre stage! But it just works doesn't it? A bit like staring into an open fire, the old fashioned styled bulbs where the filament is a thing of beauty, can make a simple bulb holder into a great statement light. Shop cool lighting from peastyle shop here and enjoy some Hygge this winter.

The colder darker months aren't so bad after all!

Plants and flowers are a huge trend in home décor, and 2016 is definitely the year to be bringing the outdoors in.

Indulging in botanical wallpaper, fabrics and furniture is costly, not to mention semi permanent (bit of a pain when you change your mind next year) so why not add some home accessories to create a beautiful botanical scheme instead, quick, easy and the great thing is, you don't have to dig too deep into those pockets.

Here are 5 of our favourite botanical ideas to help get you started …

1) BASKETS

Handmade and natural, baskets are SO useful. What a brilliant way to show off your indoor plant collection!  Perfect too for hiding those hideous brown plastic containers that they come in. You can NEVER have too many baskets.

2) STORAGE BAGS

A Simple stylish storage bag, what’s not to love? It's hard to believe that storage bag wasn't made to show off your prized plants.

3) CUTE PLANT POTS

Make a statement by grouping together adorable little plant pots. Add a tea-light a small keepsake, some books maybe. I love this way of decorating, creating clusters of favourite objects is a great way to tell a story.

4) ON THE WALL

There’s no doubt about it, there is a lot of love for the botanical print going on at the moment. We've seen some amazing examples of simple monochrome posters and prints, like this one from by Garmi. I especially love the dramatic back drop of this dark wall and the brass accents.

5) MACRAME HANGING PLANT POTS

Nothing screams ‘botanical style’ to me more than a hanging planter and the 70's revival of macrame is so exciting. I remember my mum conjuring these up when I was a kid. I LOVE the fact that they have come back into our homes.

Outdoor Living

The sounds and smells of summer ..... ahh, it's what I live for all year round. It's finally the month of July and summer has arrived!

An outdoor living space is so important to me, somewhere to shade from the heat of the mid-day sun and a space to relax on those balmy evenings, watching the sun set and listening to the birds sing, Bliss!

A low maintenance decked area is an ideal way to enjoy that spur of the moment flop in the garden (without the guilt of not having dusted off the lawn mower in the last 2 weeks!) This really IS an outdoor living space, with sumptuous cushions, throws and cozy lighting. Try these cafe style festoon lights from the peastyle collection to add that cool vibe to your outdoor haven.

Adding some cushions to an outdoor sofa is just the ultimate in luxe living. I know, I know! we in the UK are not blessed with long spells of sunshine, so we need to keep traipsing back and fore to the shed to put them away, oh but when they are out and you can rest your weary head on some cushion-idge - it really is just dreamy. I love the mix of rustic wood and monochorme soft furnishing in this garden escape. Try some peastyle cushions to add some comfort to your precious sunbathing time.

Family gatherings around a big expansive table where the kids can go free range is a massive bonus of summer time meals. This rustic chic dining area is full of gorgeousness don't you think? From the natural lamp shades to the table centrepieces - I want it all! If I lived here, I'm pretty sure I'd get good at making sourdough too (dreaming ..... )

Try peastyle's finishing touches with our lampshades and centrepieces to bring your indoor comforts outside.

Happy summer! enjoy those long evenings in your outdoor living spaces and remember to tag and share your outdoor spaces with us over on instagram

A room that has "wowed" me

I was asked recently by a magazine to describe a room that has particularly "wowed" me. It was pretty impossible to whittle it down to just one, there are just so many to choose from!

It prompted me to start writing short posts on my blog (something on my "to do" list for a while now!) this way I can share with you what inspires me, interiors that make my heart beat a little faster and ...... well other random (but hopefully interesting) things.

So here goes, I'm a self confessed addict of Instagram, there are seemingly endless accounts full of heart-stoppingly gorgeous homes out there and it's probably my main source of interiors inspiration.

The houses and rooms that particularly draw me in are the effortlessly stylish Scandinavian ones, with their bright white walls, floor to ceiling windows and cozy log burners.

I have been regularly sharing my favourite shots over on Instagram  for a while now, tagging them with #peasshotoftheday. Enjoy swooning over some of them here or head over to my instagram feed for a fuller selection.
